An SMS message exceeding 160 GSM characters or 70 Unicode characters that is automatically split into multiple segments and reassembled on the recipient device.

Why Long SMS Matters

A single SMS segment has a hard character cap, 160 for GSM 7-bit, 70 for Unicode. Any message longer than that cannot be sent as one segment; it has to be split, sent as multiple linked segments, and reassembled by the recipient's handset into what reads as one message.

How Long SMS Works

The message is split at 153 characters per segment for GSM encoding, or 67 for Unicode, the drop from the single-segment limit leaves room for a User Data Header (UDH) that carries a reference number and segment order, which is what lets the handset reassemble the segments in the right sequence as one message.

How SMPPCenter Uses This

SMPPCenter automatically detects when a message exceeds one segment, splits it correctly for the encoding in use, and bills per segment, matching what the carrier actually charges for the send.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the message exceeded a single segment's character limit and had to be split into multiple segments to send. Carriers bill per segment, not per logical message, so a 200-character GSM message sends and bills as two segments even though it reads as one message on the recipient's phone.
