Why SMSC Matters
Every SMS in the GSM standard passes through an SMSC at some point; it is the store-and-forward layer that queues a message if a handset is briefly unreachable and retries delivery. Operators run their own SMSC; aggregator platforms run a client-facing SMSC-like layer in front of it.
How SMSC Works
An SMSC accepts submit_sm PDUs from bound ESMEs, queues them, forwards them into the mobile network for delivery, and reports status back via deliver_sm delivery receipts. It also routes inbound (MO) messages back out to the correct ESME.
How SMPPCenter Uses This
SMPPCenter's SMPP server component performs the SMSC role toward your downstream customers: accepting their binds, queuing and routing their traffic, and returning delivery receipts, while SMPPCenter's SMPP client binds upstream to real operator SMSCs.
