External Short Messaging Entity, the client-side application that connects to an SMSC over SMPP to send and receive messages. Your billing system, panel, or CRM acts as an ESME when it binds to an SMPP server.

Why ESME Matters

The term exists to distinguish the sending application from the network infrastructure. Anything outside the operator's network that submits or receives SMS via SMPP is, by definition, an ESME, whether that is a bank's OTP system, a marketing platform, or a reseller's billing panel.

How ESME Works

An ESME opens a bind to an SMSC (or, in a reseller setup, to another platform's SMPP server) and submits or receives PDUs over that session. It can bind as a transmitter, receiver, or transceiver depending on whether it needs to send, receive, or both.

How SMPPCenter Uses This

When you connect your own system to SMPPCenter over SMPP, your system is the ESME. When SMPPCenter connects upstream to an operator or vendor on your behalf, SMPPCenter's own SMPP client is the ESME on that side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Effectively yes. ESME is the formal SMPP-spec term for the client-side application; "SMPP client" is the more common informal name for the same role.

Yes. A reseller platform is an ESME when it binds upstream to a carrier, and simultaneously runs its own SMSC-like SMPP server so its downstream customers can bind to it as their ESME.
