A long code is a regular 10-digit number, cheaper and faster to acquire than a short code, and it is what most conversational and OTP use cases actually need, since they do not require the extreme throughput a short code is built for.
How Long Code Works
Functionally, a long code is provisioned and bound the same way any SMPP sending number is: it can be set up for outbound-only sending or for full two-way messaging, depending on whether inbound routing is configured for it.

Most SMPPCenter customers send from long codes unless their volume or use case specifically calls for a short code, since long codes are simpler to provision and support full two-way messaging out of the box.
